Faculty Emeriti Profile: Ginny Onorati

Although faculty emerita Ginny Onorati has not gone far, we recently took the opportunity to learn what she has been doing since her retirement from Ransom Everglades. Many will remember Ms. Onorati as a beloved mathematics teacher and the longtime coordinator of the Middle School Thanksgiving food drive.
Year started at Ransom Everglades: 1974

Year retired from Ransom Everglades: Officially 2021, but I returned to teach the second semester of the 2021-2022 school year.

What subjects did you teach and positions did you hold at RE? I taught math & computer science, I was the middle school math department coordinator and middle school faculty chair of The Fund for RE.

Where did you grow up? New Jersey

Where did you attend college and what did you study? BS in Math Education from Trenton State College (now the College of NJ); MS in Math Education from Nova Southeastern University.

What inspired you to become a teacher? My favorite math teacher in HS, who tragically passed away.

How did you come to work at RE? I was working at a teacher placement agency in Princeton. The boss suggested I interview with the new head of RE. I did, and the rest is history!

What was your favorite part about teaching at RE? Seeing the “aha” moment on a student’s face when they understood a challenging concept.

What is a stand out/memorable moment with a student and why? Too many to choose from.

What is one of your favorite RE memories and why? Working alongside Henry Stavisky ’85 since he was one of my favorite students.

What do you miss the most about RE and why? The daily interaction with colleagues and students.

What are you up to now? What keeps you busy?
I keep busy by tutoring, substituting occasionally, playing bridge and canasta, volunteering at a food pantry, working out, attending book clubs and traveling.
