Led by English faculty member and experienced journalist Dr. Matt Margini, this three-week course draws on insights from the worlds of journalism, composition, and creative nonfiction to provide upper-level students with both the skills and the space they need to write a compelling personal essay for college applications. Since the audience for any college essay is an adult with good taste, the course begins by exploring a single question: "What makes a personal essay good?" Through detailed dissections of essays and features by some of the best writers of the last 50 years, students will develop an ear for vivid prose and learn structural and stylistic techniques that they can use to express who they are. From there, they will work to develop their own essays in a dedicated workshop environment, moving from the brainstorming stage to the polishing stage through two complete drafts.

At each stage, they will receive rigorous, constructive feedback from the instructor and one another in a collaborative setting that promotes accountability, growth, and the cultivation of their individual voices. Though the course is designed around the college essay, it is also designed to help students hone skills that transcend the college process. Students are encouraged to work on any piece of writing that truly matters to them.

This course is for enrichment and skill-building; completion of this course will not confer RE credit.

Young Researchers Program (YREP): Lasers is an immersive, university-style summer research experience where students join Dr. Emily Grace’s physics research group to investigate original problems at the intersection of optics, biophysics, and environmental science. Designed to mirror the structure and expectations of a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU), the program allows students to work collaboratively in small research teams and learn to contribute meaningfully to active lines of inquiry rather than following scripted labs.

Participants explore projects in three major areas:
    • Urban Mangrove Physics: biomechanics, wave–root interactions, and field-informed modeling of Miami’s coastal ecosystems.
    • Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS): using a Nd:YAG 1064 nm laser, spectrometer systems, and custom sample preparation to analyze heavy metals and environmental signatures.
    • Optical Tweezers & Biophotonics: building and optimizing tweezing systems to measure forces on microscale particles and biomolecules.
Students gain direct experience with optical tweezers, LIBS instrumentation, spectrometers, microscopes, and precision alignment tools, while developing skills in scientific literature review, experimental design, troubleshooting, and data analysis. No prior physics or lab experience is required—only curiosity, persistence, and a willingness to think deeply.

The program is open to rising sophomores through graduating seniors, with opportunities for college students and returning alumni to continue advancing their projects. Many past participants have gone on to become YREP leaders during the academic year, design their own experiments, and present their work at the APS Global Physics Summit and other professional conferences.

Students may produce a professional research poster at the end of the session, documenting the progress of their projects and creating a foundation for future work in physics and interdisciplinary science.

For more information, please email Dr. Emily Grace.
