Parents peer 'Inside the Admissions Committee' at college counseling event

The mystique surrounding college admissions committees is legendary. The behind-closed-doors deliberations are frequently described as secretive by the media. RE’s College Counseling Office had the opportunity on April 15 to draw back the curtain and shed some light on what admissions committees do during these months and months of application review.
The Inside the Admissions Committee program for rising seniors and parents provided an opportunity for former admissions officers now working as college counselors at Ransom Everglades to put their admissions hats on again for evening. They offered an insider’s perspective – and quite an extraordinary one – on the inner workings of the college admissions committee. The program, designed to demystify what can be a confusing and frustrating process for many high school seniors and families, offered many helpful insights for those in attendance.

Executive Director of College Counseling Jason Locke opened the evening with a headline from the Wall Street Journal hailing this year in college admissions as “the most confusing, chaotic college admission season in years.” Although the admissions landscape continues to change, Locke noted that RE seniors fared quite well this year. Locke thanked the team of talented RE college counselors for their efforts with the Class of 2024.

Inside the Admissions Committee featured RE presenters China Hutchins, Associate Director of College Counseling, Francisco Herrera, Associate Director of College Counseling, and Ann Parks, Director of College Counseling Communications. Director of College Counseling, Patrick Tassoni, moderated a panel discussion to conclude the evening.

Inside the Admissions Committee is the final parent and student program offered to RE's rising seniors for the spring semester. The College Counseling Office will continue their one-on-one work with Class of 2025 students and parents through the remainder of the school year and summer as the Class of 2025 prepares for the first set of application deadlines in the fall.
