Holzman Center of Applied Ethics

Rudy Ruiz '98 to open Holzman Center of Applied Ethics Speaker Series

Ransom Everglades announced that federal judge Rudy Ruiz ’98 will kick off the 2023-24 Holzman Center of Applied Ethics Speakers Series by addressing upper school students during assembly on Oct. 19. Ruiz was confirmed as United States District Judge for the Southern District of Florida in 2019 after serving as a judge in the Eleventh Judicial Circuit of Florida and starting his career in the Miami-Dade County Attorney’s Office.
Last spring, on the 25th anniversary of the Robert Segall ’82 Leadership Award, Ruiz – the very first student to win the prestigious award at RE – joined Howard Srebnick ’82 to present the 2023 award to Victor Perez ’23. Ruiz will share his insights on ethical decision making and ethical leadership when he visits Ransom Everglades next month.

RE also announced its first lunchtime discussion series; the focus for 2023-24 will be on medical ethics. These lunchtime discussions scheduled several times throughout the year are open to professional community members and students and will consider topics ranging from business ethics in medicine to informed consent to research ethics and data privacy. RE parent and physician Ken Zide helped spearhead this initiative, and students are eager to engage in conversation with him and other medical professionals in the Miami community about issues in medical ethics.

The Holzman Center is also collaborating with the upper school Honor Council on an assembly presentation about academic integrity. The RE Honor Code and the school’s core values will be at the center of the presentation, and a set of resources and follow-up activities will be shared with the student body and professional community as well. This will lay the groundwork for activities on “Global Ethics Day” sponsored by the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs on October 18.

Elevating the discussion of ethics on campus is the goal of the Holzman Center under the direction of Associate Head of School John A. King Jr.; these exciting events are just part of the Holzman Center’s programming for 2023-24. Stay tuned for the announcement of additional winter and spring speakers in the Holzman Center's Speakers Series, including Josephine Linden, former Goldman Sachs head of Global Equities Compliance, in February – and other upcoming events.
