Junior's plan for eyeglass dispenser wins RE Business Challenge
A junior's plan to put kiosks that dispense prescription glasses at airports won Ransom Everglades 13th Business Challenge at the Posner Lecture Hall on March 2. William Hyde '27 proposed AeroSpec as a fast solution to the problem of lost or forgotten glasses while traveling, and alumni judges Joaquin de Soto '97, Allison Freidin '03, Jorge A. Gross '07 and Isabella Ulloa '11 awarded him first place and advancement to the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship regional competition in April.
The judging panel awarded second place to The Living Exchange, a plan by Sloan Mason '27 and Chloe Steinberg '27 to use an intergenerational housing platform to address the dual problems of unaffordable housing for students and elder isolation.
"All of you did an absolutely phenomenal job," Freidin said. "Keep forging ahead and you're going to nail it."
Hyde's plan called for piloting three kiosks in Chicago that dispense prescription glasses for $120 in minutes. The user would input the prescription and pop the lenses into a pair of relatively inexpensive frames. "We're not competing on fashion," Hyde said, "we're competing on time."
Three other groups competed in the final round: Girish Raju '27, Salo Sawicki '27 and Avery Zubok '27 made a pitch for Kabe, their plan to create effective, removable and easy-to-install soundproofing; Enzo Antoine '27, Petar Cejas '27 and Spencer Geller '27 unveiled their plan for Orbital Paving, which would use satellite imaging to identify areas of weakness or potential problems on construction sites; and Isa Adler '27 and Ava Crowley '27 introduced Support, a social entrepreneurship brandthat would ensure the donation of one high-quality sports bra for every one purchased.
RE history and social sciences teacher Maggie Berry emceed the competition.
