Three students win Science Champion Award at the regional science fair

Dieter Manstein '25, Connor Alfonso '26 and Nelson Manstein '26 earned "superior" awards and the Science Champion Award at the South Florida Regional Science and Engineering Fair February 1, and the trio also advanced to the 70th Florida State Science & Engineering Fair March 25-27 in Lakeland, Fla. The students were mentored by RE STEM faculty member Dr. Yuria Sharp.
Of the more than 330 projects at the fair, only 24 advanced to the state fair and just 37 received superior awards. The students' joint project entitled "Novel Antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy with Blue Light and Vitamin B2" received a special award – the U.S. Agency for International Development's Science Champion Award – which recognizes an exceptional project that demonstrates potential to address a salient international development challenge.

Nelson Manstein and Alfonso submitted another project, "Neural Network Identifying Simulated Breast Cancer Lesions with Novel Localization Technique," which also earned superior honors and advanced to the state fair. That project was among nine from around Florida that earned fourth-place honors in the category of Intelligent Machines, Robotics and Systems Software category at the state event.
