Environmental sustainability activities mark Earth Week
Ransom Everglades celebrated Earth Week on both campuses with a variety of activities April 21-25 spearheaded by Director of Environmental Sustainability Kelly Jackson and supported by RE's science faculty and student environmentalists. On the Everglades Campus, middle school students participated in the annual Earth Week Festival, which included a performance by the Recycled Orchestra of Cateura from Paraguay, a famous troupe that performs with instruments made from reclaimed landfill materials such as metal, wood, plastic, brushes, forks and spoons. To the delight of his classmates, Liam Kalstone '31 stepped into the role of drummer with the band, while Harper Harris '29 served as interpreter. They also heard from Brazil Indigenous leader, preservationist and activist Arassari Pataxó – who emphasized that small individual actions can promote positive global change.
At the Ransom Campus, upper school students from the Environmental Sustainability Council organized a weeklong series of events to get the student body involved with educational and conservation efforts. The week began with a meaningful collaboration with Compost for Life spearheaded by Chloe Jimenez '26 and Tomas Jimenez '28; an effort at freshening up old clothes by screen-printing logos designed by Dominique Cederberg ’26 onto them; a walk/bike to school day; a celebration of thrifted fashion; and a student workshop led by Teens Against Fast Fashion co-founders Charlie Sender '26 and Dylan Berkowitz '26. The events, supported by ESC faculty sponsors Jesse Velazquez and Maddy Quirke-Shattuck, showcased the many ways students are championing sustainability beyond the classroom.
